Google Ads in Slovakia: how not to waste the budget at the start

Advertising has one advantage SEO does not: it can bring an enquiry on launch day. And one drawback: it can burn a month's budget in a day too.

Below: what to set up before the first euro, where money is most often lost, and how to tell whether the campaign pays.

Ready to run ads?

Google Ads and Meta with tracking wired properly, so you can see what comes back.

What must be ready before launch

The order matters more than it appears. Advertising pointed at an unprepared site is not "the start of an experiment", it is a paid exit.

1. A page for the specific service. Someone searched oprava webstránky and should land on the page about fixing websites, not on a home page listing every service at once. Every extra step to the right information costs you part of the traffic.

2. Working enquiry measurement. Without it the campaign cannot be evaluated and — more importantly — Google has nothing to optimise on. How to set it up is in configuring GA4.

3. Consent Mode v2. Since March 2024 Google does not accept EU data for remarketing and conversion modelling without a consent signal. The practical effect: some conversions go uncounted and the campaign looks unprofitable even while enquiries arrive. More about the banner.

4. Loading speed on mobile. In advertising this is money directly: the click is paid for and the person left before the page appeared.

Budget: how much is actually needed

The standard answer "start with 5 euros a day" does not survive the arithmetic.

Work backwards. Say a click in your niche costs 0.60 € and one visitor in twenty leaves an enquiry — a contact costs about 12 €. To judge whether that pays you need 20–30 enquiries, that is 240–360 € purely on gathering statistics.

Hence the practical figure for a narrow service in Bratislava: 10–15 € a day. Less works too, but the conclusions take three months rather than one — and you pay throughout.

Better to start with one city and one service. Spreading a small budget across all of Slovakia and six services is the fastest way to get neither data nor enquiries.

Keywords: longer means cheaper

The main rule: the more specific the query, the cheaper the click and the higher the chance the person is genuinely looking for what you sell.

On match types separately. Broad match with no negative keywords is the most common cause of a wasted budget: Google interprets the query loosely and brings in people who do not need your service. Start with phrase and exact match, and add broad later, once the negative keyword list exists.

Negative keywords: the starter list

Negative keywords tell Google when not to show the ad. Without them you pay for random clicks from day one.

A basic set for Slovakia worth adding immediately:

zadarmo, zdarma, kurz, škola, práca, brigáda, návod, sám, svojpomocne,
šablóna, stiahnuť, wordpress zadarmo, ako urobiť

And the same in English if you work with an English-speaking audience: free, course, jobs, vacancy, diy, download, template, tutorial.

The list then grows from practice. Once a week in the first month, open the search terms report and see which words your ads actually appeared for. Negative keywords come from there — and so do queries you never thought of.

Do you know how many enquiries the site actually brought?

I set up GA4, Tag Manager and conversion tracking so the numbers match reality.

Five places where budget is most often lost

Not theory — what turns up when checking other people's campaigns:

  1. Conversions are not passed to Google. The algorithm has nothing to optimise on, so it optimises for clicks and spends on the cheapest ones.
  2. Broad match with no negative keywords. You pay for queries unrelated to your business.
  3. Ads point at the home page instead of the page for the specific service.
  4. One budget for brand and new queries. People who already know your company eat most of it, and in the report it looks like an excellent campaign with cheap conversions.
  5. No Consent Mode. Some conversions go uncounted and the campaign looks unprofitable.

The fifth is especially treacherous: it is the basis on which people switch off advertising that was actually working.

The ads: what to write

Three things that genuinely affect the cost per click and the response:

The headline repeats the query. Someone searches oprava wordpress webstránky — the headline should contain those words. This affects not only response but Quality Score, and therefore price.

There are specifics. "Website repair" loses to "Your site fixed in 1–2 days, pay afterwards". Numbers, timescales and terms work better than adjectives.

There is a difference. For an entrepreneur in Slovakia, "we speak your language, invoice with an IČO" weighs more than "a professional approach".

How to tell whether the campaign pays

Forget click counts and ad position. Three numbers matter:

  • Cost per enquiry — what you paid for one contact.
  • Share of enquiries that became clients. Counted by hand, but without it the previous number is meaningless.
  • Cost per client — cost per enquiry divided by that share.

Then the arithmetic is simple: if a client brings you 900 € of profit and costs 120 € in advertising, the campaign does not need evaluating, it needs scaling.

Advertising and SEO: not either/or but when

They are often set against each other, though they solve different problems on different timescales.

Advertising brings enquiries immediately and stops with the budget. SEO takes 3–6 months to build and then works without paying per click.

A sensible order for a small company: first put the site and measurement in order, then run advertising on the highest-margin service, and use the money it brings to build content that over time replaces part of the paid traffic.

Advertising also gives what SEO will not give quickly: data on which queries actually bring clients. That is the best source of topics for pages and articles.

If you would rather someone else set it up

I will configure campaigns with correct measurement, build the negative keyword list and show what an enquiry really costs. Details on the advertising service page.

I have lived in Slovakia for over ten years, work as a Slovak s.r.o. and issue a faktúra with an IČO you can put through your books.
