WordPress or a custom build | White Eagles & Co.

WordPress or a custom build: choosing by the brief, not by fashion

The argument is old and mostly unhelpful, because each side answers a different question. A WordPress developer counts the launch budget. A framework developer counts speed and control. Both are right and both are talking about something other than what matters.

What actually decides it is different: what you will be doing with the site in a year. Here it is factually, without campaigning for either side.

What is being compared

First, definitions, because "custom" means different things to different people.

WordPress is a content management system running more than 40 % of all websites in the world. You get a ready system, a theme (the look) and plugins (the functions).

A custom build is a site written for a specific brief on modern tools: React, Next.js, Python or PHP. There is no ready system; there is exactly the functionality required.

Important: "custom" does not mean "no admin panel". A panel is built — just for the sections that genuinely change.

Money: do not count the first invoice

The most common mistake is comparing the launch price.

WordPressCustom
Launchcheaperdearer
Plugins and subscriptions100–600 € a yearusually none
Maintenancemandatory and regularminimal
Changespartly yourself, partly a developera developer
After 3 yearsoften a rebuildstill working

The rebuild line is the key one. A template site lives until the first task the template cannot do. Then it begins: one plugin almost fits but not quite; a second conflicts with the first; a theme edit disappears with the next update. At some point it becomes cheaper to build again from scratch.

Real development prices in Slovakia are in what a website costs.

Speed: the myth and the truth

The truth: a typical WordPress site loads slowly.

The myth: WordPress is to blame.

What makes it slow is a specific build. A marketplace theme drags sliders, a page builder and a dozen plugins along with it, each with its own set of scripts and styles. Together, megabytes of code load for a page with one paragraph of text.

A carefully assembled WordPress — a light theme, no page builder, three plugins rather than fifteen — runs fast. But such a build takes discipline and costs noticeably more than "we bought a theme for 60 dollars".

Why it matters: Google factors speed into positions and judges by the mobile version. How to check your own — the DIY SEO audit.

Security: where the hole actually is

They do not attack WordPress. They attack an un-updated plugin.

The mechanics are almost always the same: a vulnerability is found in a popular plugin, the author releases an update, and bots sweep the internet looking for those who did not apply it. A week after disclosure the only vulnerable sites are the ones where nobody did anything.

The practical conclusion follows. A WordPress site requires regular maintenance — not an optional service but part of the cost of ownership. If there is nobody to do it, the question is not whether it will be compromised but when.

A custom site has a smaller attack surface simply because there is almost no third-party code in it.

WordPress and custom-built sites alike. Most faults are fixed the same day they are reported.

Slovak specifics that general comparisons omit

Here WordPress and a custom build fail equally easily — just differently.

Mandatory company details. A Slovak company's site must state the IČO, DIČ, registered address and register entry. No international theme accounts for that: it was not written for Slovakia. The full list.

A cookie banner with Consent Mode v2. Ready plugins charge a subscription and often block measurement more than needed — you lose data even where consent was given. Analysis.

Enquiry measurement. A marketplace theme will not configure GA4 with key events for you. Without that there is no way to know whether the site works. How to set it up.

Language. Multilingual support in WordPress is handled by a plugin, and its choice decides whether Google sees your language versions as versions or as duplicates. Why that matters.

When WordPress is the right choice

Without irony — there are plenty of such cases:

  • A content site whose point is regular publishing: a blog, a magazine, a news portal.
  • A small site on a limited budget, where you need to announce yourself quickly.
  • There is a person who will run the site and needs a familiar editor.
  • A standard brief with no non-standard requirements: services, prices, contacts, a form.

When a custom solution makes sense

  • There is logic ready plugins do not have: booking by your own rules, price calculation, integration with an accounting system.
  • Speed is critical — advertising, where every second of loading costs money.
  • Several languages with correct markup as the basis of your promotion.
  • The site will grow and you want that growth not to hit a template.
  • Nobody will maintain it and you need a solution that does not fall apart unattended.

How to decide in five minutes

Answer four questions:

  1. Who will change the content? If you, and often, you need a panel — an argument for WordPress or for a custom solution with editable sections.
  2. Do you have a requirement others do not? If so, you will outgrow a template.
  3. Who will maintain the site? If nobody, a custom solution is more reliable.
  4. What will things look like in two years? If the site stays the same, take the cheaper option. If you plan to grow, budget for the rebuild.

My approach

I build sites to the brief, not to the technology. More often that means Next.js or PHP: fast, no subscriptions, with a panel for the sections you genuinely edit. But if the brief fits WordPress and a familiar admin matters to you, I will say so plainly — I do not sell an expensive solution where a simple one is enough.

I have lived in Slovakia for over ten years and have launched 12+ sites for Slovak companies: Biliardovňa with table booking, Krása štúdio OK with booking through Telegram, Top Sklad with availability management. I work as a Slovak s.r.o. and issue a faktúra with an IČO.
